Trauma-sensitive teaching for migrant children

Toolkit for teachers

Dear colleague,

The world keeps changing and people are migrating on a daily basis. Teaching with an open heart for the mixed feeling, home sickness and other emotional wounds of the child will help you to help the child feel at home in his new place.

As a Dutch pedagogical counselor for teachers and author of Teaching Refugee Children I have prepared a Toolkit for teaching trauma-sensitively to newcomers. The Kit will be tailor-made for your school.

The toolkit consists of:

1. Online pedagogical Q&A

Teachers, school leaders and healthcare workers can freely ask me questions about teaching refugee children, whether or not from Ukraine. Children from Syria and Afghanistan can also feel touched by the reception of Ukrainian students in the classroom. You can send in your questions prior to the consultation.

Please send me an e-mail to set up a Q&A for your school.

2. Free: Mindfulness exercises for children

Mindfulness supports the children to find moments of relaxation. It helps them to unwind and gently regulate their emotions.

Mindfulness in the Classroom (in English, Ukrainian, Russian, Dutch and Arabic)

3. Book Teaching Refugee Children

In Teaching Refugee Children I take the teacher on a journey in trauma-sensitive teaching.

You will find:

- Practical exercises and worksheets for self-care

- How to see and deal with trauma in the classroom

- 25 Tools for trauma-sensitive teaching

- Exercises for group dynamics

- Tips from children and colleagues

- 3 Universal values for a warm pedagogical climate

- 22 Mindfulness exercises for newcomers

With the seven steps of the psychological growth model The Hero's Journey (Joseph Campbell) you learn to better understand yourself and your students.

4. E-learning Trauma-sensitive teaching

You take good care of your pupils but how do you take care of yourself? Because you are the key, the e-learning starts with your practical self-care. You will then receive tools for trauma-sensitive teaching and suggestions from newcomers and from your colleagues. So that you can guide children with confidence in their new future in your country.

5. Individual teacher counseling

Teachers are having questions about self-care, trauma-sensitive teaching, processing their own emotions and opinions & feeling and setting your limits. In counseling we will offer practical self-insight and tools that the teacher can use directly in the classroom.

6. (Online) Seminar Trauma-sensitive teaching for newcomers

Based on the current requests for help from teachers and school leaders, we work on self-insight and practical tools for trauma-sensitive teaching in approximately 2.5 hours. A seminar will be tailor-made for the needs of your school.

Reviews

Thank you for your wisdom.

Karin Verdel, Coordinator Dutch as second language, Purmerend

We enjoyed an online study day about self-care by Hélène van Oudheusden with the team. Not obvious, but it was very much appreciated. A few reactions from the team: "The study day has been good." "So positive!" "So grateful!" "What a bliss to feel togetherness again." "I really felt heat!"

An De Coster, director De Vinderij, Lokeren, Belgium

Hélène van Oudheusden is more than a coach. She is distinguished by her attention to the person behind the teacher and the peace she offers in this.

Nico Verbeij, Expert Coach Foundation Teacher, Zoetermeer

Everyone who works with newcomers should get started with the e-learning Increase your Happiness at School. Very special! There is often a lot of talk about what to do and what not to do with newcomers. But for this training, everything that is written matters, they are not empty words. You are indeed human first and then teacher.

Mahalath Dijkstra, AZC-School De Bazaar, Rijswijk

Self-care is a new and sometimes complicated matter for me, but Hélène has made me realize that I am traveling as a hero myself. That makes me curious
